   • Successful completion of a postgraduate training program that is discipline appropriate to Family Medicine outside of Canada that is a minimum of two years in duration or that is a minimum of one year, but less than two years in duration, and is the accepted pathway in the jurisdiction of training for Family Medicine/General Medicine, and a minimum of two years of independent unsupervised clinical practice experience. Plus, the successful completion of a Practice Ready Assessment.

Clinical Assistants shall only provide medical services in a College approved clinical division or department within a tertiary or secondary care setting in Newfoundland and Labrador. A Clinical Assistant shall not act as a most responsible physician (MRP) but as an extension of a supervising physician. There is presently no pathway from Clinical Assistant to independent practice.

Sponsorship is required for all Clinical Assistant Licences.

Clinical Assistant Licences shall be subject to oversight and supervision.

   • completed postgraduate training program that is discipline appropriate and is a minimum of 12 months in duration, and two years practice experience (must be institutional based clinical services providing direct patient care interaction in the acute care setting); or
   • completed postgraduate training program that is discipline appropriate and is two years or more in duration. No practice experience is required for eligibility.
3. Registration or Recognition in their area of practice in a jurisdiction to the satisfaction of the College
4. Successful completion of the Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or equivalent for domain of practice.
5. Successful completion of MCCQE Part 1 or acceptable alternative (if applicable)

Applicants do not require an offer letter of employment to submit an application but do require continuous employment to qualify for and maintain a Clinical Assistant Licence.

Clinical Assistants will be subject to approval of employment position by the Council as determined by policy framework prior to the issuance of a licence.

1. Be a graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program recognized by one of the following:
   • Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada (PACCC);
   • Accreditation Review Commission – Physician Assistant (ARC-PA); or
   • General Medical Council (GMC) in the United Kingdom (UK), or accepted for registration by the GMC;
2. Hold one of the following:
   • certification or be eligible for certification from PACCC;
   • certification and membership from National Commission on Certification of Physicians Assistants (NCCPA); or
   • certification (PANE/PARA) from the Royal College of Physicians (UK);
3. Provide a College approved Supervision Agreement.

Physician Assistants who obtain a licence with PACCC eligibility must continue to hold eligibility to challenge the PACCC PA Certification Examination to maintain their Licence. Physician Assistants who no longer hold eligibility to challenge the PACCC PA Certification Examination or do not obtain certification will be reviewed by the College on case-by-case basis.

Physician Assistants who have not obtained certification from PACCC or NCCPA will be subject to a period of Oversight and Assessment.
