The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador regulates the practice of medicine in the public interest by direction of the Medical Act, 2011 and the Medical Regulations, 2023, ensuring that physicians registered and licensed in the province have the necessary education, training, and experience.

All physicians who practice medicine in Newfoundland and Labrador must be registered and licensed with the College.

The licensing policies below outline the minimum requirements of the College. All physicians licensed within the province are expected to comply with all College policies.

This list below is not currently an all-encompassing comprehensive listing of policies to acquire and continue to hold a licence. This page will be updated as policies are updated and developed.

🔴 Important: Effective October 1, 2026, the following changes to licence eligibility policies will take effect:

• Postgraduate training requirements for applicants trained outside Canada or an approved jurisdiction applying for a Provisional Licence – Family Medicine. You can find the updated policy here.
• Currency of practice requirements for applicants who must successfully complete a Practice Ready Assessment prior to the issuance of a medical licence. You can find the updated policy here.
