Eligibility criteria includes verification of an applicant’s qualifications, experience, and professionalism. Please review the College’s basic eligibility criteria in the flow diagrams below to determine if you may qualify for a Licence to Practice Medicine.

Note: Further documentation and verifications may be required, beyond that which is outlined in the basic eligibility criteria flow diagrams, once the application process has begun.

Provisional Licence Requirements
A direct entry Provisional Licence can be granted via CFTA through a streamlined process. Click here to learn more.
Sponsorship is required for all Provisional Licenses.
All new provisional licences shall be subject to a period of oversight and supervision.
Clinical Assistant Licence Requirements

Clinical Assistants shall only provide medical services in a College approved clinical division or department within a tertiary or secondary care setting in Newfoundland and Labrador. A Clinical Assistant shall not act as a most responsible physician (MRP) but as an extension of a supervising physician. There is presently no pathway from Clinical Assistant to independent practice.
Sponsorship is required for all Clinical Assistant Licences.

The Canadian Free Trade Agreement (CFTA)
The CFTA allows labour mobility across Canada for physicians who hold a Licence to Practice Medicine in another Canadian jurisdiction without the applicant having to complete significant additional training, examinations, or assessments.
Additionally, physicians who do not meet the requirements for licensure in Newfoundland and Labrador but hold a Licence to Practice Medicine in another Canadian jurisdiction may be eligible for a similar licence type with CPSNL under the Canadian Free Trade Agreement (CFTA).
