- Personal Health Information Act (PHIA) – sets out rules for the collection, use and disclosure of personal health information. It includes rules that provide individuals with the right to access their own personal health information. To help meet physicians and other health professionals meet PHIA requirements, the Department of Health and Community Services posted information on the Department’s Website that will help custodians to understand their obligations under the Act and develop policies and procedures within their own practice for handling personal health information in compliance with the Act.

- Mandatory Reporting – Physicians have a legal and professional obligation to maintain the confidentiality of patient information. There are circumstances, however, where physicians are required to report particular events or clinical conditions to the appropriate government or regulatory agency.
